The Week in Giving #2

Another week, another set of do-gooders going out of their way to do good things.

That’s right, it’s the second ever edition of The Week in Giving.

Social care charity donates hundreds of bonnets for premature babies

Last Wednesday was World Premature Day, a day dedicated to supporting the babies and parents impacted by premature births.

Cue then, the heroes at social care charity Community Integrated Care, to donate hundreds of bonnets to help protect the heads of premature babies in Cheshire and Merseyside.

The donation is a result of a unique project launched by the charity earlier this year, which challenged its colleagues, the people it supports and fans from the rugby league community to get crafty and create Rugby League World Cup 2021 themed baby bonnets.

The project has been led by volunteers participating in the charity’s inclusive volunteering partnership with the Rugby League World Cup 2021, which enables people who have care and support needs to take part in exciting and fulfilling volunteering projects.

Building charity rally members to renovate home for recent amputee

Our penultimate stop is Flintshire in Wales where the Band of Builders charity have completely renovated the home of recent amputee, Cher Little.

Cher, a mother of two, became suddenly ill in 2020 and was diagnosed with a rare and often fatal bloodstream infection. Her chances of survival were as low as 20% at one point but Cher managed to pull through but had to have both legs amputated.

Band of Builders, a charity focused on practical projects to help members of the UK construction industry who are battling illness or injury, rallied contractors and suppliers from far and wide to get to work on extending Cher’s home.

A new extension was built, significantly increasing the size of the living area, and a new low-level kitchen and wet room were added. Cher’s bedroom was also refitted and doorways were widened with ramped access outside to make the home wheelchair accessible and give Cher more independence.

A project like this would normally take months but was completed in just 31 days.

Talbot Village Trust supports local schoolchildren with £10,000 donation

Finally, to the South Coast, where the Talbot Village Trust have made a £10,000 donation to Life Education Wessex, a charity focussed on the wellbeing of school children.

The trust, which has been helping the area for over one hundred years, made the donation to fund the charity’s ‘Skills For Life’ programme. The programme teaches children how to look after their bodies and mental health and how to avoid risky behaviours that may damage their wellbeing.

The charity is well-known for its Life Buses that travel to schools and deliver sessions. However, the pandemic put a stop to this as the buses didn’t have sufficient ventilation to be Covid secure.

The donation will help develop alternative delivery methods for the workshops, using digital technology zooming directly into classrooms  (SCARF Live Online) and in school classrooms (LifeBase).
